Theresa Griffin
A highly experienced teacher, with more than 30 years’ experience, Theresa Griffin is a multi-disciplinary teacher, taking students for maths, science, humanity subjects and PHSE. As the Year 7 tutor, Theresa is also responsible for helping the pupils transition from primary into secondary school, a period that can be incredibly difficult for many.
“Transferring from primary to secondary school can be especially difficult for children who may not have been in school in Year 6 or even for some years. They may have come from a one-to-one teaching environment and, for these children, it can be incredibly tough time, as they may not be used to being with other children or in a classroom.”
“There is a very supportive environment here, along with the most delicious food – our lunches are out of this world, and the school is in a stunning setting.”
Key to LVS Hassocks’ success in supporting children joining the school in Year 7 is Theresa’s focus on helping the students find strategies to cope, from identifying ways to regulate their emotions, to empowering them to successfully access the school curriculum.
“As their tutor, I like to bring them all together to help them jell – I tell them they might not like everyone in their class, but they need to learn how to tolerate and respect each other, no matter their differences. It is an important life skill.”
Life skills are central to what is taught at LVS Hassocks. “Life skills prepare our children for what’s to come next. Whether that is a new school term or preparation for exams and GCSEs, and ultimately leaving school to progress into further education or a job, and also the ability to live independently.”
Excellent communication, between student and teacher, but also between the school and parents is an important part of LVS Hassocks’ daily life. “I prepare a short weekly report for parents, telling them about how their child has excelled that week, along with any matters that might require further discussion. I also provide information about things that are coming up the following week, such as a reminder to bring in football kit.”
LVS Hassocks’ teachers understand that every child has different needs and they work to support them through any challenges they face. “As a teacher here, you get to know every child extremely well and understand what sensory or emotional needs they may have and how best to help them thrive. There is a very supportive environment here, along with the most delicious food – our lunches are out of this world, and the school is in a stunning setting. The children have so much to enjoy here.”
