“Research shows that a very small percentage of young people with ASD, including Asperger’s Syndrome, are in sustained full-time employment.  We are passionate about changing that outcome for our students”

Sarah Sherwood – Director of Special Educational Needs

Effective transitions are key to successful outcomes for our students, whether they be transitions into school, the daily transition from home to school, transition from one activity or location to another, transitions from one year to another, or transitions on to further education or employment.

At LVS Hassocks staff work closely with students and their families to agree the best support for each student’s transitions, understanding that these transitional challenges are rooted in executive functioning and flexible thinking difficulties.  Visual supports, timers, social stories and a range of other autism specific strategies are employed to ensure that students are able to make successful transitions.

Entering a new school can be a daunting experience for any student, and we aim to make the process as anxiety free as possible for our students.  The transition into school may take a few days or as long as a few months, with the student supported throughout the process with photographs, social stories, timetables and other strategies so that they are aware of what they will be doing and which staff will be supporting them.  The ongoing use of autism specific approaches enables our students to access full time education, sometimes for the first time in their school career.

Transitions from school to further education or employment signify a major change in a student’s life and need careful planning and management.  Independent careers advice is provided for students and a range of options are explored from local mainstream colleges to supported internships and apprenticeships.  The transition process begins as soon as we know where a student is moving on to when a transition plan is drawn up with the student and their family.  LVS Hassocks staff support the student to visit their next provision as many times as necessary for them to feel confident, and if required, help them with journey planning if they are attending a local college.
